The National Weather Service yesterday issued a tropical storm warning for Darby, meaning its effects would be felt within 36 hours.

Shelters are scheduled to open at 4 p.m.

As of 8 a.m. the storm was continuing on a west-northwest track, with sustained winds of up to 60 miles per hour. Tropical-storm force winds extend up to 90 miles from Darby’s center.

The storm center is expected to pass near the Big Island on Saturday night, with heavy rains, strong winds and high surf arriving late Friday.
