Trauma center meets standards

North Hawaii Community Hospital was redesignated as a Level III trauma center by the state Department of Health.

This redesignation confirms that NHCH continues to meet the standards set by the state for a Level III trauma facility and is equipped to work within the state trauma system to assist in the care of trauma patients in Hawaii County.

The Level III designation means NHCH offers comprehensive emergency services with rapid treatment of patients. Trauma surgeons are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, along with 24-hour access to radiology, laboratory and anesthesia services.

North Hawaii Community Hospital’s trauma team was activated for 135 patients in 2015.

The most common causes of trauma in North Hawaii are falls, motor vehicle collisions and ocean-related injuries.
