Hawaii County recently received some much-appreciated assistance from Takamine Construction to replace the roofing at the NAS swimming pool facility in Hilo.
Craig and Audrey Takamine volunteered their crew for the project coordinated by county Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma.
The deteriorated roof was in need of replacement for more than 20 years, said Hilo Councilman Dennis “Fresh” Onishi, who appropriated funds from his district contingency account to purchase materials for the project.
“Takamine Construction’s work crew generously volunteered their time and labor to replace the roof, providing a safe recreational facility to the 700-plus keiki and adults that utilize the pool annually,” Onishi said.
The NAS summer program offers water exercise and fitness classes for adults, learn-to-swim classes for adults and keiki, a novice swim team and junior lifeguard tryouts.
In addition, many schools and organizations will begin using the pool when classes begin in August.
This summer, the NAS pool provided classes to more than 140 adults and 300 children.
