Gavin Kalani Fernandez, 51, of Waianae, formerly of Hilo, died May 31 at Waianae Comprehensive Health Center. Born in Wahiawa, he was an employee at Sack-N-Save in Nanakuli, former Waiakea High School football player, coached Big Island girls and Haunani women’s softball teams and Keaukaha Little League teams and was a member of Kats Men’s Fast Pitch team, Lopaka’s and Pu In Sai coed softball teams and Big Island and Orchid Isle umpire associations. Celebration of life 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 30, at Haili Tent in Panaewa. Survived by son, Gavin Kealiikoa Ching of Hawaii Kai, Oahu; daughter, Shiryl (Royden Requelman) Arizumi Fernandez of Kurtistown; father, Chaley (Vanita “Nene”) Kaleo of Hilo; mother, Avon Palomares of Oahu; brothers, Charles “Bula” (Maile) Kaleo IV of Hilo and Maxie Claveria of Las Vegas; sisters, Sanci (Aubrey) Ahulau-Kaleo and Stormi (David Tanaka) Kaleo of Hilo, Mokihana (Darren) Gibson-Quirouet, Maila (Kelii) Gibson-Bandmann and Kanoe (Gye) Gibson-Nitta of Oahu; hanai sister, Randa Lynn “U‘i” Kaupu; hanai children, Randon Dale “Skiddo” Kaupu, Raelyn “Kawehi” Kaupu and Raevyn Kaupu of Hilo; three granddaughters; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
