A man allegedly stabbed Tuesday night during an argument with his girlfriend was the one who called 911 to report the stabbing, according to a court document filed by police.

A man allegedly stabbed Tuesday night during an argument with his girlfriend was the one who called 911 to report the stabbing, according to a court document filed by police.

The probable cause affidavit states 48-year-old William Josh Sutton, who lived in a tent in a wooded area off Wainaku Avenue in Hilo, told officers his 38-year-old girlfriend, Faylana Fromm, stabbed him with a 4-inch serrated green-handled knife. Sutton said he and Fromm were talking inside the tent when Fromm accused him of cheating, then struck him on the right side of the face with “an unknown object.”

Sutton told officers he was leaving the tent when Fromm began to stab him to the right side of the body, the document states.

Police wrote that Sutton had four fresh stab wounds to the deltoid muscle, shoulder blade, forearm and thigh, all on the right side, according to the affidavit.

Sutton was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where, at last public report, he was in stable condition.

Fromm, who is charged with first-degree assault, appeared Friday in Hilo District Court. Her court-appointed attorney, Justin Haspe, asked Judge Harry Freitas to grant Fromm supervised release.

“Ms. Fromm intends to stay at the homeless shelter,” Haspe said, and noted Fromm has no prior felony convictions. “I do see that the bail is on the low side, given the nature of the charge, but given Ms. Fromm’s economic situation, I believe that even $5,000 is the same as no bail.”

Deputy Prosecutor Glenn Shiigi requested that bail be maintained.

“Ms. Fromm has one prior contempt of court conviction and one failure to appear conviction,” Shiigi said. “… She was also granted supervised release on Dec. 30, 2015, pending a (mental examination). She is scheduled to come back on that return on July 26 … at 1:30 p.m. So this incident occurred while she was on supervised release.

Freitas maintained Fromm’s $5,000 bail and ordered her to appear at 2 p.m. Monday for a preliminary hearing.

First-degree assault is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment upon conviction.
