A 38-year-old homeless woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend four times during an argument the night of July 19 will receive a mental examination to determine whether she is fit for trial and legally responsible for her actions.
Hilo District Judge Henry Nakamoto ordered an examination by three mental health professionals for Faylana Fromm. The request was made by Fromm’s court-appointed attorney, Justin Haspe.
Fromm is charged with first-degree assault, a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, for allegedly stabbing her 48-year-old boyfriend, William Josh Sutton, who required hospitalization for his wounds. Police say the stabbing took place in the couple’s tent, which was in a wooded area off Wainaku Avenue in Hilo.
Nakamoto scheduled a return hearing on the doctors’ reports for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13. He also maintained Fromm’s bail at $5,000 and ordered her to stay away from Sutton should she be released from jail.
