Waiakea senior Shon Katahira tied for the low round with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, leading team Hawaii at the Junior America’s Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Katahira made eight birdies and got as low as 5-under until a double-bogey on the par-4 14th hole at Guadalajara Country Club.

Hawaii was eighth in the 18-team field. Evan Kawai shot 73 and Jun Ho Won came in at 75 as Hawaii carded a 1-over. A third Oahu golfer, Remington Hirano, shot 79, but only the top three golfers counted toward the team scores.

Southern California was in first at 4-under.

In addition to Katahira, four other golfers were at 69.

The final round is Wednesday.

Volleyball meeting on tap

Waiakea girls volleyball will hold a preregistration meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the school gym.

The meeting will provide information for parents and girls in grades 9-12 who are interested in trying out for team.

Tryouts are mandatory and will be held from 3-6 p.m. Aug. 1-4. Check-in is 2:45 p.m. Aug.1.

To tryout, all interested participants must have a current sports physical, be enrolled at Waiakea and be cleared by the athletic trainers. Participants are required to be at tryouts each day.

Hilo bowling meeting Aug. 3

Hilo High bowling will hold a mandatory meeting for athletes and parents at 5 p.m. Aug. 3 in Room C-125 at the school.

No bowling experience is necessary.

PCA workshops at Waiakea High

The Positive Coaching Alliance will present an “Elevating your game” workshop for athletes at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Waiakea High cafe.

All Waiakea athletes are invited.

For parents of athletes attending Waiakea and St. Joseph, the Positive Coaching Alliance will present “The High School Parent: Developing Triple Impact Competitors” workshop at the Waiakea cafeteria at 5 p.m. Aug. 2.

Both workshop will last approximately 90 minutes, and then Waiakea will run a 40-minute presentation on National Federation of State High School Associations Concussion Awareness.
