Waiakea senior Shon Katahira shot even-par 72 to remain at 3-under Wednesday, keeping Hawaii steady during the second round of the Junior America’s Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Katahira fell into a tie for fourth and was four shots off the lead, but his team rose ever so slightly into a tie for six as Oahu’s Remington Hirano rebounded to lead the way with a 71 that got him to 6-over. Oahu’s Evan Kawai shot 74 and was 3-over and Jun Ho Won’s 77 was discarded in the team race. Ho Won, also of Oahu, was 8-over.
Washington’s Ryan Maine (67) led by three strokes at 7-under, and San Diego moved into the lead at 6-under 426. Hawaii was eight shots behind after Hawaii carded its second consecutive 217.
Katahira made birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 – both par-4 holes at Guadalajara Country Club – and made the turn at 5-over, but his birdies on Nos. 2 and 7 were both sandwiched in between bogeys.
The final round is Thursday.
Kealakehe grad on watch list
University of Hawaii and former Kealakehe offensive lineman Asotui Eli was named among a group of 38 players selected to the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity.
Eli made 12 starts – 11 at center and one at right guard – during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2015. He missed only the Louisiana-Monroe game due to injury and was one of two freshman offensive linemen in the Mountain West to start 12 games. He ranked third-best on the team with an 82 percent grade and participated in 96 percent of offensive snaps in games he played.
The winner of the 2016 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award will be announced on December 7. Five finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 17.

Kohala seeks three coaches
Kohala High is accepting applications for the following coaching positions:
• Boys and girls cross-country
• Girls varsity basketball
• Varsity softball
Applications can be picked up at the school’s main office, and the deadline to apply is July 31.
Special Olympics golf tournament
Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf will be holding its 9th annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at Banyans Golf Club.
The format is a four-man modified scramble and each group will include a Special Olympic athlete. Entry fee is $150, which also includes a cart and lunch. Special Olympians play for free.
All proceeds go to Special Olympics East Hawaii golf program.
The field is limited to 68 players and 17 Special Olympians are playing.
