Katahira closes with 1-over 73
Waiakea senior Shon Katahira shot a 1-over 73 on Thursday, leading Hawaii to a sixth-place finish at the Junior America’s Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Katahira, a co-leader after the first round, came in at 2-under 214 to place eighth. He double-bogeyed No. 8 at Guadalajara Country Club to sink to 1-under, but he made made 10 pars and one birdie the rest of the way.
Washington’s Ryan Maine (71) pocketed a two-shot victory at 8-under. Washington was top among 18 teams at 9-under 639.
Hawaii finished 15 shots behind. All three of Katahira’s teammates are from Oahu, and none finished in the top half of the 72-player field: Evan Kawai (76) finished 7-over, Remington Hirano (74) was another shot back and Jun Ho Won (73) was 9-over.
Hilo volleyball tryouts Tuesday
Hilo High will holding girls volleyball tryouts from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the school gym.
All interested participants must have current physical examinations prior to participation.

The Waiakea Pirates youth baseball organization is opening registration to all interested 6-year-old T-ball, coach-pitch, Mustang and Pony level players.

Keaau volleyball, bowling tryouts
Keaau High School will be holding tryouts for girls volleyball and boys/girls bowling.
Girls volleyball tryouts will begin on Monday, Aug. 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. daily at the school gym.
Boys and girls bowling will begin on Thursday, Aug. 4 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Kilauea Military Camp bowling center.
All interested participants must have a current physical on file in the athletic office for participation and are asked to come prepared with the appropriate attire and shoes for practices.

Ohana shoreline fishing tourney
Friday is the deadline to enter the county’s 20th annual ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament from Aug. 19-21, with weigh-ins conducted from noon to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21, at Honokaa Gymnasium.
Divisions will be keiki 5 to 12 years old, teens, men, women, kupuna at least 55 years old and ‘ohana or families.
Entry fee is either $25 or $30 per person or family, depending on the division entered. Make checks payable to County Director of Finance.
Completed registration forms must be turned in to the Department’s Recreation Division office at 799 Pi‘ilani St. in Hilo or postmarked by July 29.

Softball tourney is cancer benefit
The third annual battling against cancer 14-inch softball tournament will be held Aug. 27-29 at Walter Victor Complex.
Divisions are kupuna and mixed (2 or more wahine) and the entry fee is $200.
The tournament is sponsored by Hui Malama Ola Na Oiwi for Malama Ka Pili Pa’a cancer support group.
Teams must supply their own softballs.

Special Olympics golf tournament
Special Olympics East Hawaii Golf will be holding its 9th annual golf tournament at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 at Banyans Golf Club.
The format is a four-man modified scramble and each group will include a Special Olympic athlete. Entry fee is $150, which also includes a cart and lunch. Special Olympians play for free.
All proceeds go to Special Olympics East Hawaii golf program.
The field is limited to 68 players and 17 Special Olympians are playing.
