During the week of July 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.
During the week of July 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; Puna, four; South Hilo, two; North Hilo and South Kohala, one each.
So far this year, there have been 605 DUI arrests compared to 562 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.7 percent.
There have been 804 major accidents so far this year compared to 866 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 12 official fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities, compared with 10 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 20 percent for fatal crashes.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
