During the week of July 25-31, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were younger than 21 years old.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna and South Hilo, four each.
So far this year, there have been 620 DUI arrests compared to 589 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.3 percent.
There have been 826 major accidents so far this year compared to 890 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 12 official fatal crashes, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities, compared with 10 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 20 percent for fatal crashes.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
