HONOLULU (AP) — The state will have a special election to fill a seat in Congress left vacant after the death of U.S. Rep. Mark Takai.
The state Office of Elections says the special election will be Nov. 8 along with the general election.
Chief Elections Officer Scott Nago said voters in the special election will choose a candidate to fill the last two months of Takai’s term. On the same ballot, voters also will select a candidate to serve a two-year term that begins in January.
Nago says the election for the two-year term will appear on the ballot right before the special election.
Nomination papers will be available for candidates Aug. 15.
Takai’s office said in a statement Tuesday a remembrance ceremony will be hosted for the congressman Aug. 18 at the state Capitol in Honolulu, followed by a public viewing.
A memorial service for Takai is planned for the the following day at the First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu in Kaneohe, Oahu.
The war veteran and longtime legislator died last month at the age of 49 after a monthslong battle with pancreatic cancer.
Takai served in the state House of Representatives for 20 years before he was elected to U.S. Congress. He won his first statehouse seat at age 27. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Hawaii Army National Guard for more than a decade.
