Volcano
The Volcano club’s 15th annual installation and annual scholarship presentations took place June 19 at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The incoming president is Julie Williams, who had a distinguished career in education and looks forward to leading Rotary service projects on behalf of the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences.
Working with Williams on the 2016-17 board of directors are outgoing president Lynda Gretz, treasurer Paul Field, secretary Carol Hamilton, foundation chairwoman Charlene Myers and sergeants-at-arms Lindsay Barclay and Roger Schweitzer.
Also honored were Christina Ulep-Samonte, who was awarded the $5,000 Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship, and Yukio Ishii, who received the Mike Nelson Scholarship in the amount of $2,000. Both winners will attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo this fall.
Service projects in Volcano village and fundraising for scholarships for area students are the main focus of the Rotary Club. Upcoming events include the annual Labor Day Lobster Fest on Sept. 5. In addition to fantastic food, there will be music, door prizes and fun for all. The event takes place at Cooper Center. The Rotary Club of Volcano meets at 7:30 a.m. Thursdays in the Koa Room at KMC headquarters. Everyone is invited to see how Rotary “enriches lives with service and sociability.”
Hilo Bay
Kevin D. Hopkins became the 28th president of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay during a ceremony at the Hilo Yacht Club.
Hopkins is an internationally known scientist who has managed aquaculture and fisheries development projects throughout the world for more than 40 years. He and his wife, Margarita, teach at University of Hawaii at Hilo.
The officers for 2016-17 are: David S. DeLuz Jr., president-elect; Bettye Williams, vice president; Tim Hansen, secretary; Paula Uusitalo, treasurer; and board members Michael Carroll, James Tyrin, Miyuki Lee, Thomas Witthans and Lorraine Davis.
The Rotary Club of Hilo Bay, also known as “the Sunrise Club,” was chartered June 22, 1988, and meets at 6:45 a.m. every Wednesday at the Hilo Yacht Club.
The club’s signature event is Hilo Bay Oktoberfest, planned this year for Oct. 7 at Sangha Hall in Hilo.
