Parents of brothers killed in plane crash file lawsuit
HONOLULU (AP) — The parents of two Oklahoma brothers who were among five people killed in a Hawaii plane crash are suing the skydiving company that owned the plane.
Marshall and Phillip Cabe were about to go skydiving in May when the single-engine plane crashed and burned soon after taking off from a Kauai airport.
Honolulu attorney Rick Fried says he filed the lawsuit Monday so the parents can find out why the plane’s engine failed.
D&J Adventures Inc. owner David Timko declined to comment.
Pilot Damien Horan and skydiving instructors Enzo Amitrano and Wayne Rose also died in the crash.
Sewage spills near university
HONOLULU (AP) — State officials are testing water in a Honolulu canal after nearly 13,000 gallons of sewage overflowed near the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The Friday night spill affected some beach activities as signs were posted at the entrance of the Ala Wai Boat Harbor warning visitors about unsafe water. A bodyboarding competition also was canceled Saturday because of the possible threat of illness.
Officials say debris caused the spill, which entered a storm drain that empties into the Ala Wai Canal. Crews were able to release the blockage and cleaned and disinfected the area.
Ivette to dissipate south of Islands
HONOLULU (AP) — Tropical Depression Ivette is expected to dissipate to the south of the Islands during the next day or so.
But forecasters say remnants of the storm are expected to bring rain and wind to the Big Island and possibly Maui on Wednesday and Thursday.
Central Pacific Hurricane Center forecaster Tom Birchard said Monday moisture from Ivette is expected to ride in with the trade winds.
During the weekend, remnants of Tropical Storm Howard passed north of the Islands, cutting off trade winds and giving the state high humidity.
