17 arrested for DUI

During the week of Aug. 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

During the week of Aug. 1-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

The number of arrests by district were:

• South Hilo, 11.

• Puna, three.

• Kona, two.

• South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 637 DUI arrests compared to 616 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.4 percent.

There have been 858 major accidents so far this year compared to 925 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 13 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 15 official fatalities. That compares to 11 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 14 official fatalities during the same period last year.

This represents an increase of 18.2 percent for fatal crashes and an increase of 7.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
