It was 62 years ago, in 1954, when the young, vibrant and hopeful Democratic Party, unable to secure the Hilo Armory for its pre-election rally, chose to move the celebration to the Mooheau Bandstand. The following day, the Democratic Party achieved its statewide “revolution” and the rest is history.
Once again, the Mooheau Bandstand on Hilo Bay will light up and host the historic Hawaii Island Democratic Grand Rally starting at 5 p.m. Aug. 12 to celebrate the party and its candidates. More than 60 Democratic hopefuls have been invited to participate and face off with one another in preparation for Hawaii’s primary election Aug. 13.
People are encouraged to demonstrate their support for their favorite candidates and hear from them for the last time before the primary.
“We have a wonderful slate of dedicated Democratic candidates running for office this year and every candidate will have an opportunity to address their supporters,” said Michael Janovsky, the event’s media chairman.
“An uplifting and patriotic program is planned for the evening.”
