HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii’s president is looking to expand his duties to become chancellor of the university’s Manoa campus, a position that hasn’t been permanently filled for two years.
President David Lassner said in an email to university staff and students on Thursday he will recommend himself as an interim appointment at next week’s board of regents meeting. He’s seeking a Sept. 1 start date with no additional compensation.
Robert Bley-Vroman ends his interim term as Manoa chancellor this month and declined to be considered for an extension.
He was approved for the position in August 2014 following Lassner’s dismissal of Tom Apple.
Lassner acknowledged concerns about him having two positions, saying he realizes “this approach does not represent the preferred choice for some.” But he added that “nearly everyone told me that this is no time for a placeholder interim chancellor.”
Lassner said he expects to submit recommendations to the regents for a permanent candidate sometime during the fall semester.
Regents recently considered revisiting the need for a system president and Manoa chancellor.
The roles were combined in the 1980s before being separated in 2001.
The board ultimately voted to keep the positions separate earlier this year, but called on Lassner to implement a plan to consolidate redundant services at Manoa and at the system level.
