The resignation of Dan Grabauskas Thursday comes amid concerns about his leadership of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, or HART.
Construction costs continue to soar.
Grabauskas will receive $282,000 in a separation agreement.
Board Chairwoman Colleen Hanabusa says the project got off to a strong start because of him.
Grabauskas says he hopes stepping down will allow HART to move forward with fresh leadership.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell has called for a shortened version of the 20-mile route. He recommends building it only to Middle Street, about 5 miles shorter than going all the way to Ala Moana Center.
Caldwell told the HART board the city can’t afford the longer route right now.
