Ka‘u High School Alumni and Friends is hosting its 15th annual community potluck luncheon from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday at the Pahala Community Center.
All Ka‘u High alumni, school administrators and staff, and people in the community are invited to attend. Former residents and teachers at Ka‘u schools also are welcome. Bring a favorite dish to share and enjoy a day of fun, food and live music.
The purpose of the all-class reunion is to bring alumni and residents back to Ka‘u to reconnect with their roots and meet classmates and other alumni, neighbors and friends. The annual potluck takes place on the Sunday of the statehood holiday weekend in August. The set day allows individual classes to make plans for their own reunions to coincide with the all-alumni Sunday potluck.
The class of 1966, which hosted a well-attended all-alumni reunion in June in Las Vegas, will celebrate its 50th reunion Saturday at Kilauea Lodge in Volcano and join the potluck Sunday. The class of 1973 is hosting an all-day get-together for all classes graduating in the 1970s at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pahala Community Center. Other classes are meeting during the weekend and will join the Sunday potluck.
On Sunday, Ernest Kalani or Chase Cabudol will kick off the entertainment portion of the program playing nostalgic music from the 1950s and ’60s. More oldies will be performed by Hands of Time, featuring Calvin Ponce, lead singer and guitarist, Johnny Walker on keyboard, Harry Evangelista on bass and Dennis Salmo on drums. Pahala Kupuna Halau also is scheduled to perform a few numbers.
The class of 1958 is hosting this year’s potluck. Class members working on the event are co-chairmen Margaret Ann Cabudol and James Yamaki, Richard Fujioka, Mary Peralta, Laurence “Cappy” Capellas, Sally Louis, Clyde Silva, Gay Polido, Wayne Kawachi, Cyrus Sumida, Lisa Dacalio, Lovey Grantz, Brenda Domondon, Joe Arce, Dennis Santiago and Ju-Ann Kai, whose late husband, Milton Kai, (class of 1958) originated the idea for the Sunday potluck reunion, and other volunteers.
For information, contact Margaret Ann Cabudol at 928-8164 or Yamaki at 969-6828.
