Hawaii’s unemployment rate inches higher to 3.5 percent
HONOLULU (AP) — The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations says Hawaii’s seasonally adjustment unemployment rate rose to 3.5 percent last month.
The department said Friday the rate was 0.1 percentage point higher than the jobless rate of 3.4 percent marked in June.
The agency says the food service and dining industries added jobs, as did education and health services. The construction sector lost jobs.
Hawaii’s jobless rate was last this high in August of last year. The rate fell to 3.1 percent in February and March before inching back upward.
Honolulu rail transit authority to see another member leave
HONOLULU (AP) — The agency overseeing Honolulu’s $8 billion rail transit project will have to start preparing to fill another vacancy left by its chairwoman, who has announced plans to step down.
Chairwoman Colleen Hanabusa of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation said Thursday that she will likely leave before the November general election. The former Congresswoman is looking to reclaim her seat as Representative of Hawaii’s First Congressional District and is running in two elections.
The announcement of Hanabusa’s planned departure came the same day as the resignation of the agency’s executive director, Dan Grabauskas.
Grabauskas had stepped down amid concerns about his leadership.
Hanabusa said the rail project got off to a strong start because of him.
