School closures announced as Hurricane Madeline approaches

Hawaii Island public schools will close Wednesday and Thursday in response to Hurricane Madeline.

All interscholastic events are cancelled the same days.

For a list of charter school closures, visit www.chartercommission.hawaii.gov.

University of Hawaii and Kamehameha Schools campuses also will close Wednesday.

The following schools will act as emergency shelters as of 5 p.m. Tuesday:

  • Hilo High
  • Honokaa High
  • Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate
  • Ka‘u High
  • Keaau High
  • Kealakehe High
  • Kohala High
  • Konawaena High
  • Laupahoehoe Public Charter School
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Pahoa High
  • Waiakea High
  • Waikoloa Elementary
  • Waimea Intermediate​
