Heavy rains cause landslides, streams to overflow
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Maui police and fire crews helped evacuate 11 people from Iao Valley as heavy rains fell and streams overflowed overnight. Some residents in Happy Valley in Wailuku evacuated on their own.
The county says large landslides forced the closure of Hana Highway from mile markers 14 to 16.
An overflowing river and landslides closed Honoapiilani Highway in several areas.
The county opened three emergency shelters at the Lahaina Civic Center, War Memorial Gymnasium and Hana High School.
The county Department of Water Supply on Wednesday recommended people in central and south Maui boil their drinking water because of possible contamination from flooding.
Food service worker positive for hepatitis A
HONOLULU (AP) — State health officials said another food service worker is among the more than 250 people throughout Hawaii who have tested positive for hepatitis A.
The state Department of Health said Tuesday the infected worker is an employee of Harbor Restaurant at Pier 38. The risk of contracting the disease at the business is low.
The worker was on the job as recently as Monday. Officials are warning those who ate at the restaurant from Aug. 26-Sept. 12 to contact their health providers.
The outbreak was linked to frozen scallops served raw by a popular sushi chain, Genki Sushi. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests later found hepatitis A in the scallops, which were imported from the Philippines.
“Because of the long incubation period for hepatitis A, we are continuing to see new cases of this illness even after identifying and removing contaminated scallops from Hawaii restaurants, and individuals exposed in July and August may become ill as late as September or October,” said Dr. Sarah Park, state epidemiologist.
Park stressed that the latest case does not mean there is a new outbreak or that the restaurant is a source of the ongoing outbreak.
