Man charged with threatening to kill Hawaii legislators
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The FBI and U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man in Tennessee on charges of threatening to kill members of Hawaii’s congressional delegation.
Keahiokahouna Stewart was taken into custody Friday at his Murfreesboro home. According to the complaint, Stewart sent emails and videos beginning last month threatening to shoot people at the Princess Jonah Federal Building in Honolulu.
Prosecutors allege the specific targets were U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
The complaint says that beginning in 2013, Stewart started sending a series of “grievances” to federal officials claiming his Social Security number was issued to a fellow soldier while they were stationed in Korea.
The federal public defender’s office had no immediate comment.
Genki Sushi reopens on Oahu
HONOLULU (AP) — A sushi chain involved in the hepatitis A outbreak says it reopened for business and is seeing a steady flow of customers.
The state Department of Health last week cleared 10 Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and one on Kauai to reopen. The businesses were ordered closed last month after the state identified frozen scallops served raw at the restaurants as the probable source of the outbreak.
The chain says it’s seeing many of its regular customers return since the Oahu locations reopened Saturday, but that it’s going to take some time before business returns to normal. The Kauai restaurant has been closed for renovations but was set to reopen Friday.
State prepares to open new shelter
HONOLULU (AP) — State officials are preparing to open a long-awaited homeless shelter in Honolulu.
The state aims to open the shelter in a park next to what was one of the country’s largest homeless encampments.
The so-called “Family Assessment Center” will cater to families, housing up to 50 people at a time.
The goal is to move people out of the shelter and into permanent or transitional housing within 90 days.
The converted garden shed is being turned into a shelter using state funds.
