An epidemic of eye disease is affecting thousands of animals in East Hawaii, where more than 50 percent of cats and dogs are developing mysterious white spots and cloudiness on their eyes. This can lead to partial or total blindness, and the epidemic is spreading.
The Good Shepherd Foundation is working with local and mainland veterinarians to find the cause and treatment for this eye disease. Learn more during a free public meeting from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Pahoa Community Center.
Some experts think the problem is triggered by the little fire ant, which is why veterinarians call the condition “fire ant” eye. But some veterinarians disagree.
