During the week of Sept. 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, three; Hamakua and South Hilo, two each.
So far this year, there have been 788 DUI arrests compared to 774 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent.
There have been 1,013 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,134 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities, compared to 15 fatalities during the same period last year. That represents an increase of 40 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
