A 23-year-old Ocean View man died following a single-car crash early Sunday morning on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) in Honalo, South Kona.
A 23-year-old Ocean View man died following a single-car crash early Sunday morning on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) in Honalo, South Kona.
Officers responding to a 2:36 a.m. call determined that the driver of a southbound 2013 Subaru station wagon failed to negotiate a turn just south of the 114-mile marker, ran off the mauka shoulder of the road and ran into a utility pole. The driver, identified in a police log as Jackson Mathers, was ejected from the car.
Mathers was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:26 a.m. Sunday.
Police believe speed, inattention and alcohol were factors in the crash.
An autopsy has been ordered.
Mathers’ death is the This is the 22nd traffic fatality this year compared to 15 at this time last year.
