If life on Earth is doomed, Elon Musk has a contingency plan.
The Tesla and SpaceX entrepreneur says an “extinction event” that would put an end to human life on Earth is inevitable.
He doesn’t have specifics.
But he does know how the human race can survive it.
Go to Mars.
Musk told the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara that the reason he is building his fortune is to help make us an interplanetary species. But according to Forbes, his net worth is $11.7 billion, and according to NPR, he estimates the current cost of going to Mars at $10 billion — per person. If he wants company up there, he’ll need to bring the cost down, and he’ll need other funding sources, be they donors or investors.
Sometimes, it seems manned spaceflight — a great symbol of human achievement — peaked with the Apollo missions. For generations of Americans, the moon landings are history to be found in books and old videos, while the Challenger or the Columbia was a shock they will never forget. But there is always more that is possible for human beings.
Musk’s plans and commitment seem to bring Mars a little closer.
