On Sept. 2, several members of the Hui O Wahine chapter of the Family and Community Education Club presented 111 medical evacuation kits to Hilo Medical Center.

The kits were delivered by community service committee members Ann Kikuta, Debbie Shigehara, Wilma Martinson and Lynn Namihira.

The kits, containing personal care items, are intended for family members accompanying medevac patients from the hospital’s Emergency Department, Intensive Care and Progressive Care units to off-island facilities for additional care.

The kits include items for dental, hair and body care. A notable donation to the community service project was from Hawaii Dental Service that provided toothpaste for all of the kits.

“Our community service committee feels that this is a valuable project to help our community when the family of the patient is concerned about their loved one and not themselves,” said Namihira, project chairwoman.

“We hope to continue this project beyond our first presentation of 111 kits,” she said.
