Workers with the county Department of Public Works Traffic Division are continuing to convert existing streetlights to LED lights as part of an ongoing statewide replacement effort. According to the county, 90 percent of the streetlights on the Big Island already have been converted.

Public Works staff will be working in the region of the Waiakea Houselots between East Lanikaula and Piilani streets, with work on Mililani, Hinano and Laukapu streets from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. both days, weather permitting.

“The goal is to be 100 percent converted by the end of the year,” said Barett Otani, Public Works information and education specialist.

Traffic control areas will be set up with a Traffic Division team of two to three crew members inspecting wiring and replacing it if necessary. Then, the low-pressure sodium lamps currently in place will be swapped out for the new LED lights.

“The process can take between 10 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the condition of the existing wiring/hardware and traffic/weather conditions,” Otani said.
