During the week of Oct. 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
During the week of Oct. 3-9, Hawaii Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Puna, 10.
• Kona, eight.
• South Hilo, seven.
• Hamakua, two.
• South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 846 DUI arrests compared to 819 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3 percent.
There have been 1,063 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,186 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.4 percent.
So far this year, there have been 23 official traffic fatalities, compared with 16 official fatalities during the same period last year.
This represents an increase of 43.75 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
