UH-Hilo nearly erased a horrific start, falling two points short of what would have been a sweet comeback Thursday night, losing at home to Concordia 25-7, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 16-14.
Siera Green’s kill gave the Vulcans (5-8, 3-5 Pacific West Conference) a 13-11 lead in Game 5, but it was the Eagles (17-2, 8-2) who had the final comeback of the night, getting a pair of kills from Hannah Andrews to seal the match.
UH-Hilo compiled only four kills against 11 hitting errors in the first set, but found a rhythm against the third place team in the PacWest as Marley Strand-Nicolaisen and Green each finished with 11 kills.
“I was proud of our comeback effort, especially after how poorly we played in the first set,” UH-Hilo coach Tino Reyes said. “I hope that this is one of those efforts that can help jump-start us and carry over through the rest of the season.”
The Vulcans also got a boost with the debut of Haylee Roberts, a Division I transfer who was medically cleared to play earlier in the day and finished with eight kills.
