The United Nations Association-USA-Hawaii Island Chapter is hosting a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Nani Mau Gardens to celebrate United Nations Day.

The United Nations Association-USA-Hawaii Island Chapter is hosting a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Nani Mau Gardens to celebrate United Nations Day.

Robert Lawrence Skinner, director of the U.N. Information Centre from Washington, D.C., will be the featured speaker. Skinner will present the U.N.’s efforts to address the global refugee crisis.

Skinner’s duties include managing U.N. public information activities in Washington and throughout United States, and maintaining relations with officials from the U.S. government, members of Congress, media, society, the diplomatic community and business and educational institutions.

United Nations Day has been observed on Oct. 24 since 1948. It’s a day devoted to making known to people of the world the aims and achievements of the U.N.

The cost of the luncheon is $25, cash or check, payable at the door. Nani Mau Gardens is located at 421 Makalika St. in Hilo. For reservations, contact Ruth Robison at rrobison@hawaii.edu or 935-7991.
