During the week of Oct. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
During the week of Oct. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.
The number of arrests by district were: Kona, 15; South Hilo, six; Puna, two; South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 889 DUI arrests compared with 863 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 1,131 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,248 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.
As of Oct. 23, there had been 21 official fatal crashes on the Big Island (three of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 24 fatalities, so far this year compared with 13 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 16 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 61.5 percent for fatal crashes and 50 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
