In observance of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the Alzheimer’s Association is presenting a series of lectures in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo.
In observance of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, the Alzheimer’s Association is presenting a series of lectures in November at the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 1055 Kinoole St. in Hilo.
Hilo program coordinator Chris Ridley will conduct the workshops and present three movies starting Saturday and continuing Nov. 12 and 19. The lectures and movies are free; seating is limited.
The schedule:
• The first topic Saturday is “What Is Dementia,” a workshop that reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. The 1 p.m. presentation includes short videos of people with the disease, family members of people with dementia and various professionals.
The movie “Away From Her” will be shown at 3 p.m. with a discussion after the movie.
At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will begin the first of a three-part series for anyone who is forgetful along with their family members. Attendees do not have to have a diagnosis to attend. The program is titled “Living with Alzheimer’s.”
• At 1 p.m. Nov. 12, the topic will be “Legal Aspects in Dementia,” a workshop with information about advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies.
The movie “Iris” is at 3 p.m. Based on the book “Elegy for Iris” by John Bayley, this film tells the true story of English novelist Iris Murdoch’s descent into Alzheimer’s disease and the unconditional love of Bayley, her partner of 40 years.
At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will present part two of “Living with Forgetfulness.”
• At 1 p.m. Nov. 19, the topic will be “Communication and Behaviors in Dementia.” This workshop discusses information about possible causes and types of behaviors that might arise during the course of dementia.
The movie “I Am Not Fictional” will be shown at 3 p.m. This video was produced by three sons who took care of their mother while she suffered from dementia.
At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will present part three of “Living with Forgetfulness.”
