Hawaii Electric Light Co. invites the public to its Arbor Day tree giveaway starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at its office, 1200 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo.

The trees will be distributed until noon or while supplies last.

The annual event is a partnership with Kua ‘O Ka La Public Charter School, Ho‘oulu Lahui, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program and HELCO.

To help perpetuate native species, a variety of organizations throughout the state routinely organize educational events to distribute native trees and shrubs to the community.

Trees available this year include ‘ohi‘a, koa, puhala, lama, niu, kou and kukui.

Kua ‘O Ka La students care for the trees and distribute a newsletter and information about how to properly plant, site and care for the tree.

Students and instructors also will be available to provide additional tips and explain the cultural significance of the native plants.
