During the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; Puna, seven; and South Hilo, five.
So far this year, there have been 933 DUI arrests compared to 915 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.
There have been 1,198 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,311 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 28 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island, compared to 16 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase 75 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
