Thirty years ago, a small group of Volcano Village artists had an informal studio sale of their artworks Thanksgiving weekend. What started out as a small venture blossomed into the Volcano Village Artists Hui Studio Tour, one of the most anticipated art events of the year.
This year, there will be 14 artists and craftspeople showing at six open studios and galleries from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 25-27. Meet the artists in their studios and see artwork in a wide variety of media including hand-blown art glass, wood and metal sculpture, pottery, jewelry and fiber art as well as paintings, prints, photography and more.
There will be classic pieces and new works inspired by the island and all reasonably priced. Folks come from all over to get a head start on Christmas shopping, have lunch at local Volcano restaurants and enjoy the festive atmosphere that always accompanies this village event.
Artists participating in the 2016 tour include Lisa Louise Adams, Margaret Barnaby, Pam Barton, Cynee Gillette-Wenner, Mary Goodrich, Emily Herb, Zeke Israel, Elizabeth Miller, Misato and Michael Mortara, Ira Ono and Erik Wold. Guest artists include Nash Adams-Pruitt, Phan Barker, Charlotte Forbes Perry, Tim Freeman, Scott Mitchell, Scott Pincus, Randy Sutton and Joan M. Yoshioka.
This will be the final Artists Hui sale for Cynee Gillette-Wenner, whose exquisite ethnic textile collections have nearly sold out each year.
The Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center again will be one of the stops on the tour. The Volcano Art Center’s annual Programs Preview Exhibit also will be on display at the Niaulani Campus. This exhibit features works by artists who will be offering classes, workshops and exhibits at the center in 2016.
A special drawing for pieces contributed by each of the artists will take place on the final day of the tour. For more information, call 987-3472 or 985-7487. Maps to the artists’ studios will be available at local businesses and galleries in Volcano and online at www.VolcanoVillageArtistsHui.com.
