Kalaeonekuekaa Akui

Sport: football

This honor could have gone to any member of the Wailoa Razorbacks’ Pop Warner varsity team, which beat the Panaewa Alii 34-12 on Sunday to win the Big Island championship.

But the pick here is Akui, a Hilo High freshman who was one the team’s most valuable players and leaders en route to the title.

Akui, a running back and quarterback, wanted to acknowledge his entire team, saying Wailoa couldn’t have gotten this far without a sound offensive line and stout defense.

The Razorbacks head to Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Sunday for the state championship and chance to advance to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando.
