More trees, please

More trees, please

Last Thursday, a climate change forum took place in Kailua-Kona.

Bruce Anderson, aquatic resource manager for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, said that sedimentation is part of the cause of coral bleaching.

Abby Frazier of the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center said Hawaii is getting warmer and drier. She said a 2-degree temperature increase will shrink native bird habitats by allowing mosquitoes to live at higher elevations.

Reforestation of Kohala and Mauna Kea can solve many problems by reducing erosion and our carbon footprint. Also, planting trees at higher elevations will give the native birds a chance to avoid mosquitoes.

Let’s support the Hawaiian Reforestation Program, the Kohala Watershed Partnership and Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project and others who are working to reforest Hawaii.
