Joan Cooper Kaaua, 83 of Hilo died Nov. 6 at home. Born in Portland, Ore., and raised on Oahu, she was retired alumni coordinator for Punahou Schools and merchandise director and historian for Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association. Yoshinori Nishi, 82, of Hilo died Nov. 11 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Ookala, he was a retired diesel mechanic for HT&T, member of Berean Bible Church, and U.S. Army veteran. Yoshinori Ota, 87, of Hilo died Oct. 31 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired heavy equipment mechanic for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin. Survived by daughters, Cheryl (Lyle) Takeuchi and Wanda (Neil) Nakamura of Honolulu; sons, Darren (Lisa) Ota of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Darrell Ota of Hilo; brother, Yoshiyuki (Sandy) Ota of Hilo; sister-in-law, Lorna Ota of Waipahu, Oahu; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
