The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says it will plug two scientific geothermal wells no longer in use in Puna.
A map provided by the DLNR shows the wells are located in the Kapoho area, with one at or adjacent to the Puna Geothermal Venture site. The wells are 6,802 and 5,526 feet deep.
They were drilled in 1991 for research purposes.
DLNR officials will attend a Puna Geothermal Venture community meeting Dec. 8 to discuss the plans.
The meeting is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. at the Pahoa Community Center, 15-2910 Puna Road.
The wells will be plugged by Water Resources International Inc., which received the $2,036,000 contract.
