Retain Chaitra
I am shocked and dismayed to hear that Dr. Sharada Chaitra’s contract (with Hilo Medical Center) has not been renewed.
She and Dr. Djon Lim are the best cardiologists in Hilo now and in the past 24 years.
I have lived in the Hilo area for 24 years and have been a cardiology patient during that time.
I have experienced several different cardiologists through the years, most of whom have been part time in Hilo and practice on other islands.
When Dr. Chaitra arrived, I heard of her excellent reputation, and know Dr. Lim recommended her highly.
Upon Dr. Lim’s death, I started seeing Dr. Chaitra, for whom I have great regard. She is knowledgeable, efficient, kind and interested in her patients. She is everything I expect in my doctor.
When I first met her, I asked, “Are you staying in Hilo?” She responded “Yes, I like Hilo very much.”
I would insist that Hilo Medical Center do whatever is necessary to keep Dr. Chaitra here.
You say in your article that Hilo Medical Center “will continue its ongoing search for two cardiologists.” HMC has been searching for cardiologists for years.
Now they have an excellent cardiologist, and they are letting her go. I do not understand.

Learn from Germany
I wish I could be as sanguine as Michael Kingston is about the impending Donald Trump presidency (Tribune-Herald, Your Views, Nov. 30).
Mr. Kingston finds comparisons between Trump and his supporters, and Adolph Hitler’s movement in Germany in the 1930s, to be overblown and alarmist.
But I think it should be pointed out that most Germans in 1932 had no idea Hitler would actually do the things he and his supporters were advocating. They were sure that, once in office, Hitler would moderate his stands and govern within the mainstream, and would indeed, as he promised, “make Germany great again.” So, they sat by complacently as Hitler’s minions took over the government, and the worst human rights disaster in modern European history unfolded.
It can happen here. And if we simply say, “Oh, don’t be an alarmist,” and do nothing to protect our rights, we will wind up like the Germans did in 1932.
