Honolulu PD sees spike in fireworks violations calls
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police say hundreds of fireworks violations have been reported on Oahu before fireworks are allowed to be discharged for the celebration of New Year’s Day.
Police Maj. Allan Nagata said Wednesday the police department received 216 calls related to fireworks complaints at the end of November. Nagata encouraged the public to report any fireworks violations.
Fireworks are permitted between 9 p.m. Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. Jan. 1.
Nagata’s announcement comes after firefighters extinguished a blaze that broke out on the roof of a home in Waipio, northwest of Honolulu. Investigators determined last week’s fire was started by an illegal firework.
Officer shoots car theft suspects outside restaurant
HONOLULU (AP) — Officials say two men were shot by a police officer after a driver attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle rammed a police vehicle and nearly hit an officer outside a restaurant in Mililani.
The Honolulu Police Department said officers responded to a report of the stolen vehicle Thursday when the incident occurred.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Yoro says in a statement that the officer fired, hitting the driver and a passenger in the front seat.
A third person in the vehicle was uninjured, and no officers or bystanders were injured.
An emergency services spokesman says two men ages 30 and 31 were in serious condition, one with a back wound and the other with wounds to the hip and elbow.
Passenger sends NYC-bound plane back to Honolulu
HONOLULU (AP) — A New York City-bound flight returned to Honolulu on Tuesday after a passenger who was drinking allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend, her children, passengers and crewmembers, the FBI said.
According to an FBI affidavit, James August allegedly slapped a female flight attendant’s shoulder and threatened his girlfriend. The captain of the Hawaiian Airlines flight decided to turn the plane around for the safety of occupants, court document said.
A federal judge Wednesday allowed August to be released to a Honolulu halfway house with conditions, including not contacting the girlfriend or her children, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Brady. It appears August, the girlfriend and children were visiting Hawaii, Brady said.
