Hawaiian Airlines boosts its 4Q revenue forecast
DALLAS (AP) — Hawaiian Airlines is raising its fourth-quarter forecast for a key revenue figure and ordering more planes.
The airline said Monday it expects revenue for every seat flown 1 mile to rise between 3 percent and 6 percent, up from an October forecast of 0.5 percent to 3.5 percent. Bigger U.S. airlines have seen that number decline all year.
Hawaiian depends on visitors from the mainland and overseas, particularly Japan. During an investor conference Monday, executives said leisure trips and spending by foreign visitors to Hawaii are both rising. They said the airline cut back on discounting as it has grown more familiar to foreign customers.
The Honolulu-based airline announced it will buy one more Airbus A330 jet for long routes and lease two more Airbus A321neos, bringing its orders for the new A321 model to 18 by 2020. Those planes will mostly fly between Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast, and they will help Hawaiian speed up retirement of its less fuel-efficient Boeing 767 jets, which are about 18 years old on average.
In the first nine months of this year, Hawaiian Holdings Inc.’s net income was up 61 percent compared with the same period of 2015 largely because of a 25 percent drop in fuel spending.
Driving range at Ala Wai reopens
HONOLULU (AP) — The Ala Wai Golf Course driving range in Honolulu reopened to the public Monday following the completion of a project to improve water quality at the site.
The $1.3 million project was launched in December 2015 in an effort to get the driving range’s storm water drainage system in line with federal environmental standards. The project was intended to help protect the water quality of the nearby Ala Wai Canal.
A portion of the costs for the improvement work at the driving range was covered by a loan from the federal Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water State Revolving Fund.
The driving range was fully replanted and has newly installed vegetated bioswales and detention basins to capture, filter and treat storm water runoff.
Man sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug promotion
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A Maui man convicted of attempting to sell methamphetamine and marijuana out of his van was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Harold Hodges, 61, was sentenced Friday on several charges, including promotion of a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Hodges was arrested in December 2015 after police pulled him over and searched his van. Authorities say they found more than 2 grams of meth, 55 grams of marijuana and 42 oxycodone pills inside the vehicle. They also claimed to find a large gallon-sized plastic bag containing several empty packets, two digital gram scales and nearly $4,000 in cash.
In handing down Hodges’ sentence, Judge Rhonda Loo cited his lengthy criminal history. She said Hodges has 61 arrests and 11 convictions.
Hodges, who represented himself during trial, indicated he plans to appeal.
