Na Pua No‘eau, the Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children, announced that the University of Hawaii at Hilo received funding from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs ‘Ahahui Grants program.
The funds support UH-Hilo’s strategic goal to strengthen its impact on the state by working in partnership with other UH campuses to deliver joint program events or activities.
On Feb. 23, 2017, Na Pua No‘eau will present “E Ho‘okama‘aina” at the University of Hawaii Maui College. OHA awarded a total of $5,300 for this event, which will invite high school juniors and seniors to engage and learn about the various degree programs from faculty and program coordinators to inspire them to enter into higher education and further their career aspirations.
“Ma Uka a i Kai Akamai Engineers” will take place April 3, 2017, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. OHA awarded $1,950 to invite K-12 students and their ohana to explore how the different types of engineering (mechanical, electric, civil, etc.) were applied during the days of their kupuna. The Native Hawaiian Science and Engineering Mentorship Program is a partner in the event, which will include games and work projects that provide hands-on learning about the field of engineering.
‘Ahahui Grants support community events that meet at least one primary strategic result. The events will address OHA’s Exceed Education Standards and UH’s Hawaii Graduation Initiative.
