The 2016-17 Hawaii High School State VEX Robotics Championship will take place Jan. 5 at Keaau High School cafeteria, the first time the championship will be hosted on the Big Island.

The 2016-17 Hawaii High School State VEX Robotics Championship will take place Jan. 5 at Keaau High School cafeteria, the first time the championship will be hosted on the Big Island.

Thirty-six high school VEX robotics teams from the Big Island, Oahu, Maui and Molokai will compete for the coveted five slots for the World VEX Championships in Louisville, Ky., featuring teams from 40 countries.

The tournament at Keaau High is free and open to the public.

The competition is sponsored by Hawaiian Electric Companies, the Thirty Meter Telescope, Hawaii County, Keaau High School, NASA and the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
