During the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and Puna, seven each; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, three; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 1,019 DUI arrests compared to 1,001 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent.
There have been 1,302 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,434 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been 30 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 17 during the same period last year.
This represents an increase of 76.5 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
