Hospice of Hilo is celebrating the holiday season by lighting up “trees of remembrance” as part of its 27th annual Light Up a Life from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. until Dec. 24 at the two entrances of Macy’s at Prince Kuhio
Hospice of Hilo is celebrating the holiday season by lighting up “trees of remembrance” as part of its 27th annual Light Up a Life from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. until Dec. 24 at the two entrances of Macy’s at Prince Kuhio Plaza.
“Everyone is invited to place a commemorative ornament with the name of a loved one on the tree,” said Hospice of Hilo spokeswoman Lisa Kwee. “The ornaments are a very meaningful way to pay tribute to those we remember and love.”
This year, Hospice of Hilo asked Jo Maynard to do the honor of placing the first ornament of the season on the tree in memory of her spouse, Lucille Eckersley, who received hospice services. Maynard expressed thanks and mentioned how she and Eckersley spent many happy years together and were inseparable.
“I still can’t imagine life without her,” Maynard said. “She completed me, and now I am trying to build a bridge over that gap (of grief). I don’t know when that will be complete. This gathering and dedication to her is beautiful, and helps.”
Hospice of Hilo spiritual counselor Rebekah Bernard officiated a small memorial service in remembrance of Eckersley before the placing of the first ornament.
Light Up a Life is a community event raising funds for Hospice of Hilo’s programs. There is a suggested $10 donation for creating and hanging an ornament, however, no one will be denied the opportunity to honor a loved one.
