During the week of Dec. 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

During the week of Dec. 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; Puna, five; South Hilo, three; Hamakua and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 1,039 DUI arrests compared to 1,025 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.4 percent.

There have been 1,338 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,464 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.6 percent.

So far this year, there have been 30 official traffic fatalities, compared to 17 during the same period last year, an increase of 76.5 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
