Waikiki hotel guests forced to leave because of construction
HONOLULU (AP) — Guests of a Waikiki hotel that has been undergoing renovations for several months have been forced to leave over what the city has described as unsafe living conditions.
The City and County of Honolulu issued a notice of violation Tuesday because guests of the Polynesian Plaza have been staying in rooms on the top floor while construction is underway. The hotel’s management says the notice has affected seven or eight guests who will be relocated to the Waikiki Gateway Hotel.
The 56-unit hotel was also cited for fire alarm and stairwell violations and must correct the problems within the next week.
Dick Barns, a visitor from Australia, is one of the guests who is being relocated. He said the move is just one of the many problems he’s had to deal with during his stay at the Polynesian Plaza.
“The rooms are absolutely beautiful, but things don’t work. We’ve had five moves since we got there, from room to room to room,” Barns said. “There is no telephones in there, and the fire alarm went off the other day.”
Management said the renovations, which include upgrades to rooms, hallways and the lobby, are expected to wrap up in February or March.
Correction from the Associated Press
In a story published Dec. 25 about an effort to change the name of a Honolulu street, the Associated Press reported erroneously that several agencies are supporting the change. They have not yet given their approval. The AP also reported erroneously the name of one of the agencies. It is the Department of Planning and Permitting, not the Department of Land Utilization.
